I am Joyce Ho. I grew up in Hong Kong and trained as a designer in California. I don't have formal training in cooking but just love doing it. Maybe that leaves me a lot of freedom to "create". My cooking is simple and easy with fresh ingredients. I cook everything but often I reach back to my Chinese roots. Let enjoy this journey together!

Why did u stop making your cooking videos?
Hello, Thank you for your question. During Covid my friend/cameraman, Colvin didn't want to get in the city because he is working from home (he still does). Then I got lazy and is not motivated to do it (my fault). As you know, it is a lot of work to do these videos. First I have to come up with the idea what I want to make, figure it out, go food shopping, arrange to have Colvin to come, do the video, edit the video, write the recipe, post the video on RUclips and the recipe on my site. I am not a professional chef nor video editor just have passion for food. Also, when we started I knew nothing about video editing either. I bought the editing program and went to Apple every Tuesday morning and learn Final Cut Pro to do the videos myself. I should go back because quite a few people had asked. I promise I will try to post a new one in the next 2-3 weeks. Best regards, Joyce🥰😃
@@YouCanCookGourmet thks so much for your reply. I really enjoy watching your home style of cooking. I personally love to cook and had restaurants in Toronto Canada. But my real job is an industrial designer. I just started doing my utube channel too. But I have no idea how to edit a video? My channel would be more of a life style abit of everything to enjoy your life. Please follow me too. Any recommendations on what app or program I need to have on my laptop to make videos? When u mentioned Apple Store are the lessons free or they cost a lot? Thks so much Can’t wait to see more of your videos soon Cheers
Butterfly shrimp you made us slightly differently made although same main ingredients. Shrimp is cut down the middle and bacon is inserted at the cut. Then dipped in egg and then coated with bread crumbs, then pan fry 😂😂😊😊❤️🌹
I really love stuffed crab claws with shrimp appetizers! 😊😊😋😋😋🌹❤️
Hello, Thank you for taking the time to comment. This is my favorite too. It is so easy to eat but an order doesn't give you too many. Will you try to make it? If you do, please let me know how it turns out. Best regards, Joyce
My parents owned a Chinese restaurant in small town port Colborne called the China Star Restaurant. I took with me one of my favorite dishes, “Butterfly Shrimo” 😋😋😋😊😊👋👋🌹❤️👍👍✌️✌️✌️✌️

Man, I wish it snowed in my country. You just can't match these vibes! You have a wonderful year ahead Joyce!
Hello, Thank you. Happy holidays! Which country are you in? Best regards, Joyce
@@YouCanCookGourmetI'm from the Netherlands! It's been soaking wet here the past few months, but no snow! Doesn't happen often out here anymore.
@@POWned911 I was working there right after college in Hilversum. It was beautiful there. Everything was green unlike LA. On my way back to CA, I stopped in NYC. They said that was history🙃 I have been here ever since. Once in a while I stop and wonder, what my life would have been. I will never know. Any way, thank you for your support. Best regards, Joyce

One of my favorite dishes! Thank you for sharing ❤
My patch of a batch-:.,
This is the soup my Russian mother made, so good. Not that beet soap. That soup is Ukrainian, Polish, and maybe German. Honk Kong has the good soup.
Hello, We call this Borscht soup. I guess it is from that part of the world. I just bought a let of nice tomatoes and going to roast them and freeze them. Getting ready to make this soup in the upcoming cold weather😝😎. Thank you for taking time to comment. Let me know how it turns out with this recipe. Take care and keep cooking! Best regards, Joyce
A classic dish that’s really hard to find in restaurants these days. 🙁 Thanks for sharing this recipe!
Hello, You are right. Restaurants try to be creative to attract customers and don't do the classic recipes. Please let me know how it turns out when you get a chance to make this. Thank you for taking the time to comment! Have a nice week, Joyce
Looks yummy.
Hello, Thank you for taking time to comment! Have a nice Labor Day weekend! Best, Joyce

Hello, Thank you for your long time support.🥰😍 I am working on some new videos and hopefully I will upload them soon. Have a nice holiday weekend! Best, Joyce
It seems easy. I think I can do it.
Hello, You are right about this. It is quite simple. After you master the black bean sauce, you can use it for other meat and/or seafood. Please let me know how it turns out and how do you like it. Thank you for taking the time to comment. Have a nice the rest of the summer! Best, Joyce
I like the idea using chopstick as a stand for the plate.
Hello, Thank you for taking time to comment. Also, you can shorten the chop sticks to adjust to the size of your wok. Have a nice weekend! Joyce
Much thanks Joyce for this healthy recipe. Brings me back memories when we only got the chance to eat crispy-skinned Squab was during Chinese Banquets back in the days. 💜
Hello, I think they usually deep fried them. This recipe is definitely healthier but still taste really good. Have you try it? When you do, let me know what you think. Thank you for taking the time to comment. Stay well and eat well! Joyce
Tried it it came out so so good. Thank you
Hello, Thank you for taking the time to let me know. This is an easy but tasty recipe, perfect party food. Stay well and eat well! Joyce
oops, i accidentally bought the spicy version of fermented tofu....
Hello, It is OK to use the spicy one, nothing wrong with it. I like it a lot. Once in a while, I will make some rice. I take the spicy fermented tofu add sugar and a little oil. That makes a tasty meal.😀😍 Thank you for taking the time to tell me. Have a nice summer! By the way, this is a perfect summer dish. Best, Joyce
Really miss joyce
Hello James, I miss you too. Colvin came by and we did a couple new videos. I will try to work on them soon and will post them. I have been busy renovating my apartment. Thank you for your support! Best, Joyce
Why do we soak the liver ? Just curious
Hello, Thank you for your question. We soak the liver for the nutrients to come out in the water. We are not cooking the liver for long because they will be tough if we do. Now the soup will have most of the nutrients and the liver will still be nice and tender. Great question! Best, Joyce
Thanks for sharing your recipe. No need to clean/blanch ribs to remove the gaminess? We usually boil away the impurities first (add cooking wine with peppercorn and ginger) when preparing any rib/pork meat soup.
Hello, You are welcome. I will blanch if I make soup but not steaming like this. Thank you for taking the time to commend. Please try something else. I always try to make my recipe easy and simple. Best, Joyce
The best burnt toast in America. Joyce is my favorite Chinese Food Cook. Hands down.

a little too much black bean marinade but otherwise a classic dish. the gravy is great on white rice
Hello Richard, Thank you for your input🥰. You are absolutely right about the white rice. Have a nice day! Joyce
Where did you get so many crab claws?
I went to seafood market. They are frozen. There were about 80 - 100 in a bag. Not cheap but good. Thank you for your question. Best regards, Joyce
